Big wins sometimes come from relatively simple use cases. These teams found their footing by focusing on one big problem and one creative solution.

How 5 Teams Scored Big Wins with a Fraction of Domo

Domo has a robust catalog of capabilities, so we fully understand that if you’re a new potential user coming to our site for the first time, you might be overwhelmed by everything our data and AI products can do. But don’t let the big menu scare you off.

Just because we have so many valuable features doesn’t mean you have to use all of them to start unlocking value. Sometimes, big wins for companies can come from relatively simple use cases. And sometimes, they can come from building more advanced knowledge over time. Domo is designed so you can use as little or as much as you want, and you only have to pay for the features you need to solve your specific problems.

But if you’re struggling to think through how to put our platform to good use, take a look at how five other companies have found their footing with Domo.

1. Modeling employee retention techniques

Company: Amerit Fleet Solutions provides maintenance and repair services to ensure the safety and high performance of fleets across the United States.

Problem: With a workforce spread throughout the country, Amerit struggled to understand which factors drove employee turnover. The HR team had already begun collecting data about employee sentiment. But they needed to process that data faster so they could proactively intervene and prioritize strategies to keep their technicians on staff.

Solution: Connecting with the Domo team, Amerit was able to parse out more than 75 different factors that could potentially play a role in turnover and retention. The teams then worked together to identify which factors were statistically significant in order to build out models that might accurately represent what mattered most to the technicians.

After running about 200 models, the teams pinpointed the best model to help Amerit predict the likelihood of turnover within the next three months. Doing so allowed the company to focus on developing impactful solutions, such as improving the onboarding process.

2. Anticipating juror behavior through data

Company: Derrick Law Firm Injury Lawyers (DLF) is a statewide firm in South Carolina that focuses on personal injury cases, using a data-informed approach to prevent unnecessary litigation.

Problem: While the firm had previously conducted focus groups for large cases, they decided to begin running focus groups for smaller cases, in an attempt to help them appraise what a case might be worth, how their lawyers could build better cases, and how to assess whether jurors might be good or bad for a case. Although the data helped them reach faster resolutions, the volume of data proved challenging to handle.

Solution: Using Magic ETL, DLF transformed large amounts of information about the different members of each focus group and their responses to varying cases into an organized data set. That data set, in turn, could then be used to evaluate potential case outcomes.

By connecting data from multiple focus groups, the firm could better predict how potential jurors might award damages and bring that real data to negotiation tables as leverage. They could also explore how outcomes might differ based on specific demographics of potential jurors, like age, or by the types of cases being presented to juries.

3. Cleaning up complex financial data sets

Company: RollKall enables police departments to manage requests and schedule work for officers who take on extra duty work, such as serving as security at a sports arena.

Problem: As the RollKall’s services expanded to include invoicing and payments, the company began working with more sensitive financial information that complicated and lengthened the development cycle for reporting. RollKall wanted to speed up this inefficient process, which typically took about two months to generate a report for clients.

But before they could create the dashboards that could help provide those reports, they needed to clean up their data sets.

Solution: Rollkall’s spring cleaning started with ensuring that all data points had consistent naming. They chose clear and concise names and used Domo’s schema to add expanded descriptions to the data points that gave users the necessary context. They could also adjust financial and sensitive information to show only what the customer needed for invoices.

Through this process, they generated new clean and understandable external-facing data sets that empowered their employees to generate valuable insights, without having to rely on data engineers to explain what the values in each data set referred to.

4. Automating an easier PTO approval process

Company: One Analytics helps organizations make better decisions with their data through business intelligence and web analytics consulting.

Problem: With a growing team, One Analytics’ paid time off (PTO) approval process was unnecessarily time-consuming and increasingly impractical. When an employee wanted to request PTO, they’d have to send an email with all of the relevant information to their approver, who would then have to reply with a decision—which wasn’t unusual on its own. But both parties then had to manually keep track of what had been approved and the number of hours taken to maintain an accurate account of the employee’s PTO allowance. Unsurprisingly, tracking hours through email threads easily led to errors.

Solution: In just one afternoon, One Analytics was able to leverage Domo’s user-friendly Workflows to streamline their PTO approval process. Employees can now access a simple PTO request form and fill out all the relevant information related to their requested dates, hours needed, and purpose for PTO. When they submit the form, the workflow begins, automatically sending the request to the assigned approver.

The email generated provides all of the relevant information and gives the option to approve or deny. The requests and the responses are then captured into a data set that is used to power an app for each employee, where they can see their upcoming PTO and available time off balances. The system has simplified the process for workers and managers to accurately track their hours, while also providing better visibility into staffing.

5. Finding the right analytics platform to scale insights

Company: NavMD has created an intuitive intelligence platform that helps businesses reduce the cost of their health plan through in-depth insights and predictive analytics.

Problem: NavMD initially built its platform by embedding Power BI. But the company saw costs spike dramatically as it built out its first three dashboards. And, when team members were tasked with modeling out potential costs as the company scaled its business, they simply couldn’t. Without an understanding of the long-term cost structure, NavMD’s leaders realized they needed an alternative that could help them scale their ability to deliver insights directly to customers.

Solution: NavMD needed a platform that accomplish three things: handle large data sets with speed, allow for automation, and offer user customization. Lucky for them, Domo offered that solution. With Domo, the team could enrich their data sets with third-party data feeds and create highly customizable dashboards visualizing the different factors driving changes in customer health plan costs.

By embedding Domo’s App Studio into their platform, NavMD could break down these cost-cutting insights into clean, professional, and easily digestible visualizations for each customer. And, they were able to do so without breaking their own bank.
